The 1866–1876 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Type 2 (Cleaned) is a significant U.S. gold coin minted during the post–Civil War era. Composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, each coin contains 0.9675 troy ounces of gold and represents an important transitional design in the Liberty Double Eagle series.
Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse features Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with “LIBERTY,” surrounded by stars representing the states. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows, along with the addition of the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” introduced in 1866. Type 2 coins are known for their distinctive design and historical significance, though they were produced for a relatively short period.
